Nandaram takes technology route against fire, others to follow

KOLKATA: Nandaram market in Burrabazar that houses one of the biggest wholesale markets and has been twice ravaged by fire in the past 11 years is now using state-of-the-art sensors and power analyzers and leveraging Internet of Things (IoT) technology to detect hazards in its electricity lines and prevent another incident.

“We got the health of our power lines and electrical equipment monitored and analyzed to detect irregularities. The study detected a wire that was supposed to carry a balanced load of 80A but was sometimes carrying over 120A. It was obviously overheating and could have led to sparks and a fire,” said Deepak Sethia, director of Cachar Plywood Ltd, the company that owns Nandaram Market. Continue Reading...
